There appear to be two schools of thought:

You could beat, bomb, and torture people into being free: 'Love freedom before you make me throw your family in jail and bomb your town to rubble!'

Or you could take the hard road, taking a stand at any point where the liberties of citizens may be in jeopardy. As a result, you face vitriol, insult, and attacks on your integrity from all directions (well, usually from the right, keep an eye over there.). And you know what, you get up the next day and face it all again.

If there wasn't an ACLU we would have to invent one to watch out for the civil rights of all of us.  This organization is on the front lines for most of us performing a thankless task for the betterment of all of us.

I have to give top props to these folks as well, after working with their very capable field staff in that irritating statewide special election we just fought off.

You have to appreciate people who can make calling strangers on the phone to talk about an emotional and complicated ballot measure (Prop 73) fun and exciting. Also, they had good food and really cute T-shirts.

So the next time there's an election, look them up, and you can bet they will be working on the measure that you find most important and compelling.
